HydraFacial: what to expect before, during and after the session

How a HydraFacial in Montreal actually runs: what we look at first, the steps of the protocol, and what happens on your way out.

Hydrafacial® treatment — SHAY Esthétique, Ahuntsic Montreal

HydraFacial® is one of the most requested treatments at the clinic, and also one of the most poorly described online. You'll read everything and its opposite: that it's just a cleanse, or that it's something spectacular. The reality is simpler and more concrete — it's a multi-step protocol, done with a tip, under suction.

Here's what actually happens, in order, from the conversation beforehand to the days that follow.

Before: an assessment, not a formality

The treatment suits most skin types, and that's true. But “most” isn't “all”, and that's exactly what the consultation assessment is there to confirm for yours. We look at your skin, at what's bothering you right now, and at what you put on it day to day.

This step has a second, quieter purpose: every step of the protocol is adjusted after the assessment. It isn't the same treatment for dehydrated skin that feels tight and for congested, uneven-textured skin. And if HydraFacial isn't the right treatment for you, we say so — that's more useful than a booked appointment.

During: the steps of the protocol

Plan on about 60 minutes. The protocol runs through cleansing and gentle exfoliation, then extraction, then the infusion of hydrating serums chosen for your skin. The order isn't decorative: cleansed, exfoliated skin is skin that's ready to take in what gets infused next, whereas a layer of dead cells acts like a lid.

Extraction is the step people are most wary of, usually because of memories of an old-school facial. Here it's pinch-free: the tip draws out instead of squeezing the skin between two fingers. That's a description of the technique, not a promise about how it will feel — the treatment is generally described as comfortable and not painful, and “generally” is the right word.

After: what changes on your way out

The treatment generally involves no downtime: you go straight back to your day. That's why many clients book it before an event or over a lunch hour, rather than the day before a break.

What it aims for is brighter, more hydrated skin as soon as the session ends. As everywhere else on this site, that comes with an honest caveat: results vary from person to person and are not guaranteed. Before you leave, we advise you on sun protection and on home care — two things that weigh more heavily than people expect on what you'll see the following week.

The situations people ask for it

The treatment addresses specific things, and naming them is more useful than talking about “radiance” in the abstract. Here's what it addresses, as the treatment page describes it:

  • A dull complexion that lacks light even after a good night's sleep.
  • Dehydrated skin: it feels tight, and makeup doesn't sit well on it.
  • Congested pores and a texture that feels uneven to the touch.
  • Signs of fatigue showing on the face, often with an event a few days away.

If your main concern lies elsewhere — deeper texture, older marks, firmness that has changed — this isn't necessarily the right treatment, and that's exactly the kind of thing we tell you at the consultation rather than letting you book session after session that works in the wrong place.

How often should you come back?

It's the most frequent question, and the answer depends on what you're after. A single session gives an immediate glow: that's the reflex before a wedding, a photo shoot, a return from holiday. For maintenance, several spaced-out sessions are often advised, and the rhythm is set with you, based on your skin and your goals.

What you won't find here is an interval in weeks written into thin air. A rhythm gets decided in front of actual skin, not in a blog post — and it changes over the course of a year.

If your skin feels tight, if your complexion stays dull despite a serious routine, or if you have an event in a few days, HydraFacial is one of the first treatments we look at — without being the only one, and without always being the right one. The consultation at the clinic in Ahuntsic settles that in front of your actual skin: we tell you honestly whether it's the right treatment, and if not, which one is. The price is on the Prices page, and the treatment page details the protocol, the duration and the advice given after the session.

This article explains a treatment in general terms. It does not replace a consultation: what suits your skin is decided with you, at the clinic. Results vary from person to person.
